Woman loses hand in manufacturing accident

A woman’s hand had to be partially amputated after it became tangled in an industrial mixer Wednesday morning.

The employee was hurt at the Polyform Products manufacturing plant where industrial and artistic clays are made. According to officials, her hand became stuck in a mixing machine that mixes clay for consistency and color.

She was conscious at the time of the accident and managed to untangle her fingers before paramedics arrived. The woman was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries where her hand was later partially amputated. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified about the accident.

Des Moines officer recovering from brain injuries

A veteran Des Moines police officer sustained serious brain and internal injuries after he was hit by a pickup truck last summer after the Iowa State Fair. The officer was crossing East 30th Street and Grand Avenue when he was struck.

The man driving the pickup truck was drunk with a blood alcohol content three times over the legal limit. He is currently facing charges of driving while intoxicated, causing serious injury by vehicle, and possession of marijuana.

The injured police officer has spent months recovering in the hospital, returning home just last month. According to the police report, the officer was thrown nearly 50 feet from the point of impact.

Grain elevator explosion sends one to the hospital

A worker was taken to the hospital with burn injuries after a grain elevator exploded in Kansas last week.

Witnesses say the employee opened the elevator door and walked inside when the explosion suddenly occurred. The blast broke windows and a metal door in the head house. So far OSHA and Reno County Emergency Management are investigating the cause of the explosion.

Residents and businesses in a three-block radius of the elevator were ordered to evacuate as a precaution, and traffic and trains were diverted as the city’s gas services inspected the area for a possible gas leak. The man’s condition was not disclosed.

One killed in industrial accident

A 66 year-old man was killed earlier this week after he suffered blunt force trauma to his upper body in an industrial accident at a shipyard.

The man was a full-time sandblast helper and all authorities are releasing about the accident is that it involved a sandblaster. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is expected to help in the investigation.

The industrial company has been fined considerably by OSHA since 2001. It has received citations for welding-related and electrical violations totaling nearly $6,000. A deadly explosion in 2009 killed two workers and injured two others. OSHA found 17 willful violations, eight non-serious violations, and 11 serious violations and fined the company $1.3 million in relation to the fatal blast.
