A 22-year-old construction worker who suffered serious brain injuries in Tama County after falling off of a ladder is now recovering at home. The man hit a six-foot piece of rebar when he fell, which went through his head and into his brain.
A University of Iowa’s AirCare helicopter transported him to a hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to remove the bar. Several months have passed since the accident and, besides some reading and speech difficulties, he is quickly recovering.
His parents believe the AirCare program saved their son’s life. Since its creation more than 30 years ago, it has transported more than 20,000 patients to hospitals.
