Company’s Overseas Workers’ Comp Insurance Tested
New Jersey based non-profit International Schools Services Inc has been going through workers’ comp insurance troubles in recent years. The company employs about 160 teachers overseas, none of whom are New Jersey citizens.
In 2003, the company was denied voluntary workers’ comp insurance by its carrier. Seeking assigned coverage, they were turned down again and all overseas workers were left without workers’ comp insurance. Recently, a New Jersey appellate court ruled that coverage would have to be provided on a case by case basis to workers with sufficient ties to the state.
