Employee’s death blamed on unsafe work conditions
The death of a Gilroy, California city employee is blamed on the city’s failure to provide adequate, state-mandated safety controls.
The man, who was working on the road, was hit by a van and died at the scene. According to reports, the driver ran over something in the street and, distracted by the sound, looked away from the road to see what had caused it. In those few seconds, he hit the city worker who was standing in the middle of the street.
OSHA has issued two citations to the city of Gilroy, claiming that the lack of traffic controls and protective work clothing and equipment were major factors in the man’s death. The city plans on appealing the citations, totaling $21,600 in fines.
Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the man who died in this accident.
