New study aims to make tractors safer for children

A new study being conducted in Coralville aims to make tractors safer for children by using a tractor-driving simulator to track their movements. The leading cause of death and injury among children working in agriculture is operating farming equipment.

The program is being funded by the National Occupational Safety and Health Administration and is being conducted by researchers at the University of Iowa and the Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin.

Cameras will track the children’s every movement and compare them to adults who are also participating in the study. Researchers are hoping to determine the differences between the children’s and the adults’ procedures and when they fully develop.
