Construction worker critically injured in highway accident

A construction worker from Marshalltown was critically injured while working at interstate 80/35 at around 8:30 p.m. on Monday, August 5. The Iowa State Patrol reported that 50-year-old construction worker Trinidad Banderas was run over by an excavator due to poor visibility.

Iowa Department of Transportation spokesperson Andy Loonan says because of heavy traffic in the day time, it was necessary for workers to do their jobs at night so they can stop traffic on chosen lanes of the road when there are fewer cars. Loonan also warned people about the dangers of working in construction areas and cautioned drivers on the necessity of driving carefully in these areas.
