Annual worker safety report found 4,600 workplace deaths
An annual worker safety report by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL-CIO) entitled Death on the Job recorded more than 4,600 workplace deaths and about 50,000 deaths due to workplace illnesses in 2012, Huffington Post reported on May 8.
The report states that in 2012, the U.S. had a death rate of 3.4 in every 100,000 workers. North Dakota recorded the highest number of workplace fatalities in the U.S., with a death rate of 17.7 per 100,000 workers. Other U.S. states with high workplace mortality rates were Wyoming (12.2 per 100,000 workers) and Alaska (8.9 per 100,000 workers).
Director of safety and health at the AFL-CIO Peg Seminario stated that although the country has improved the promotion of workers’ safety, the number of workplace deaths is still “too high and unacceptable.”
